Welcome to Kiwi Guardians!

End of an Era: Toyota Kiwi Guardians Program to Conclude

After seven enriching years, the Department of Conservation (DOC), in consultation with Toyota New Zealand, has announced the closure of the beloved Toyota Kiwi Guardians (TKG) programme, effective from 1 August 2023.

Program Overview
The Toyota Kiwi Guardians initiative has provided a range of online resources, adventure maps, site signage, and a unique medal redemption program designed to engage children in environmental exploration and conservation. The primary aim was to foster a deep connection between New Zealand’s youth and the natural beauty of Aotearoa, encouraging them to care for and appreciate the outdoors.

Impact and Achievements
Andrew Davis, Vice President of Marketing at Toyota New Zealand, reflected on the program’s impact: “With whole families joining these adventures, we estimate that over 400,000 individuals have been inspired to interact with nature thanks to this initiative. It’s a legacy we are profoundly proud of.”

Reasons for Conclusion
The decision to wind down the program was made after a thorough review revealed that the current structure, particularly the medal reward system, was not sustainable long-term. “It’s essential for DOC to refocus its efforts on addressing the broader conservation challenges that New Zealand faces,” stated Penny Nelson, DOC’s Director-General.

Acknowledgments
Penny Nelson expressed gratitude towards Toyota New Zealand for their unwavering support and commitment: “I would like to acknowledge Toyota’s dedication to our partnership and the passion their people have shown for the environment. Together, we have significantly enhanced New Zealand children’s connection to nature.”

Final Opportunities
Children will have the chance to complete adventures and redeem their TKG medals until Monday, 31 July 2023, while supplies last. Although the program is concluding, DOC and Toyota encourage all Kiwi kids to continue exploring and caring for nature. There may be a delay in removing signage posts from TKG adventure sites across the country.

Gratitude to Participants
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has participated in the TKG program over the years, especially our passionate Kiwi Guardians who have earned over 100 medals. Your enthusiasm for nature and commitment to environmental stewardship embody true kaitiakitanga,” the statement concluded.
